Capstone Competition

1.0 Introduction

Capstone project is part of Integrated Design Project (IDP) assessment where student required to complete certain task and will be evaluate by panels. For our group EC2208AM, we are entitling with a project of bridge design and modeling. Bridge model are analyze and design using computer software and experimental setup is done to compare the result of theory (computerize) and real value (experimental). This bridge must meet the requirement set by the panel and will compete in a competition held by Faculty of Civil Engineering

1.1 Model Specification

The model should comply with the following specification:

Material - The bridge model shall be made from non-metallic materials such as balsa wood, bamboo, paper, thread, straws, glue, masking tape or similar materials. Composite materials such as carbon fibers or plastic materials are not allowed.

Element Dimensions - The cross section of each element must not be greater than 5 x 5 mm for square section and 6 mm diameter for circular cross section or equivalent area for rectangular section.

Clear Span – Clear span between supports should be 1000 mm.

Length – recommended overall length should be 1200 ± 25 mm.

Support – Simply supported with a base area at both ends must not be greater than 100 x 100 mm

Bridge Deck – Horizontal and part of the model structure with a maximum width 100 mm and can accommodate dual carriageway of at least 30 mm wide each.

Height – maximum 300 mm

Connection – glue or tie (thread)

Element – each element must exceed 150 mm each

Load – model must be able to carry a 5 kg loading block for at least 30 seconds.

1.2 Computer software

Computer software used for analyze our bridge model is LUSAS Finite Element Analysis. LUSAS is one of the world’s leading structural analysis systems. With a support up to 500 nodes, meshing and custom material properties, we was able to analyze our model efficiently and able to compare the result.

2.0 Mock-Up Test

Mock-up test is done to test the materials (balsa wood, glue and string) to get the parameter required as input in computer software. The size of mock-up test should be smaller than the real model and compared with computer software. For our mock-up test, we decide to make a bridge with a simple truss system. A simple truss system is sketch and the dimension of each element is then label for ease of model making.

2.1 Computer Software for Mock-up test

The model is created in LUSAS by entering the coordinate of each node available according to our design. Those nodes will then be connected with line. Bracing is provided to joint these two plane truss to form a simple bridge model. Attributes of our model is then being input. Those attributes are:

Mesh for line (cross section)
Geometric for line (truss)
Material – Isotropic (balsa wood)
Support – Roller and pin (simply supported)
Loading

For loading, the value of 50 N is applied. This value will then be divided by 4 as the load is distributed to 4 no of nodes. The requirement of this test is that the load is applied to the joint, not on the member as member will then to fail due to load whereas joint able to distribute the load to other members.

For material, an assumption is being made. This is the attribute that needs to be manipulated in order to obtain the same result as experimental. The result that will be compared is the deflection. The parameter that will be manipulated is Young’s Modulus.

2.2 Mock-up Model Testing

Mock-up model was tested in Lightweight Structure Laboratory. The model is put on a testing frame with a clear span of approximately 200 mm. For mock-up test, the clear span is different for each group and the platform on the testing frame can be adjusted. A dial gauge is place on the lower chord of the truss while 2 strings with a hook is place on 4 joint of the bridge to cater the load. A load of 10 N is added until 50 N to get 5 reading of deflection. The value of deflection is recorded and will be compared with compute deflection. An assumption parameter of material is used as a starting value.

2.3 Result of Mock-up Test

From the laboratory testing, we obtain that the mockup model deflect 1.99 mm when loaded with 50 N loads.

From the LUSAS Modeller, we obtain that the deflection on the bottom chord is 0.701392 x10-9 m when the loading is 50 N.

To match our computer calculation and experimental value, we do a try and error method of determining the value of Young’s Modulus. Based on our method, we obtain the following value:

3.0 Bridge Model

Bridge model is made when the mock-up test is completed. A sketch is done to know the layout of the bridge model. A few concepts have been made and the final concept is finalized when all of us agree with the bridge configuration.

3.1 Concept of Bridge Model

The concept of our bridge model is star. From the elevation view, we can see the shape of star on our bridge. This is to show that our bridge have a strong and unique sense of aesthetic value. Other than that, it also shows that our bridge can cater heavy load of road users. The finalize concept is shown in figure below.

3.2 Building the Bridge Model

Our group begin model making on Sunday 17th April 2011 until Tuesday 19th April 2011. With a good teamwork, we manage to complete the structure and landscape for our bridge on time. We make a good use of the material provided and try to reduce waste as efficiently as possible. We also able to color our bridge model so that it will look nice and shining as star.

3.3 Decorating the Landscape

The landscape that we agree to do is that the bridge will connect an urban area with a rural area. The bridge will cross a wide river and provide a mean of transportation for that area. Material use to complete our landscape is box, tissue, sand, ash, tree branch, water color and glue. With a creative mind, we able to come out with a beautiful landscape for our bridge.

4.0 Capstone Competition

To improve our motivation and teamwork in building this bridge model, Faculty of Civil Engineering held a Capstone Bridge Competition, where our bridge will be tested and a prize will be given to groups with a good strength (structural) and decoration (architectural). This competition is held at Engineering Complex on 20th April 2011. 36 companies take part on capstone bridge competition and 6 winners for structural and architectural is awarded respectively.

4.1 Preparation at Competition

We are provided a table based on vote and place our model on top to look elegant. With the bridge is place diagonally, it look good and will catch attention of architectural judge.

4.2 Competition Procedure

The competition is divided into two categories which is architectural and structural. It began with architectural, where architect from industry is invited to be a judge. The architectural aspect that will be rated is concept, aesthetic value, model shape and decoration of landscape. After architectural category is done, we will proceed with structural category.

For structural category, first we will weigh the bridge. Before the bridge is place on the weight balance, the judge will inspect the bridge to check whether there is unwanted material is used or the bridge does not follow specification. Having the bridge weighted, we will proceed to the testing frame.

At the test frame, 3 aspects is being measure. First is the setting up time, where the time will start as soon as our bridge is placed on the platform. We will then need to place the dial gauge on the bottom of the deck to take the deflection reading, place 2 strings at our middle joint to cater the load and have our model ready for testing. Time will be stop when the dial gauge is set as zero, including the weight hook is place on the string.

Secondly, the deflection of our bridge is measured. This is done by putting a 5 kg (50 N) loads on the hook to made the bridge deflect. The value of deflection is taken after 30 second the load is applied.

Lastly, the dial gauge is removed and the bridge will be test with a maximum loading until failure. Load is added 10 N at a time and a few second of stability are given so that the bridge will not have a sudden failure. Having completed all this task, mark will be given by the judge and mark the end of our bridge competition procedure.

Result for our bridge model is recorded during competition and also during computer analyze. Those results are tabulated and represent below.

Our hard work and time is blessed with an achievement during Capstone Bridge Model. We were awarded no 5th in architectural category and win a hamper. A souvenir and certificate also was given to us.

I have a TV Tuner from Prolink and they didn't provide a driver for Windows 7. Email them, no answer/driver. Check on the web, my TV Tuner not even listed. :(
I don't need DirectX 11 yet (i did get DX11 on Vista before)
After upgrade, some of my program need to be reinstall (better fresh installation than upgrade)
My codec seems to have a bug after upgrade. Playing video (other than FLV) will have some glitch.
I don't see any difference in speed on Windows 7. Maybe my computer is good enough for Vista/7 that I can't see a difference.
Daemon Tools not working even though it shows in the web "Full Windows 7 support"
Some of my program still can't be use with Windows 7. No update in their web to support Windows 7

IF on the last week of december, and I didn't have any driver for my TV Tuner, I will revert back to windows vista. haih~

As usual, I sat in front of my LCD, listening to MP3 and doing some revision. I have exam this Sunday, yes, I mean this SUNDAY. Haih~

As I stuck with several problem from past year question, I sat there alone. My brother been out since morning, don't know where he goes. I try to calm my body and mind. It's quite hot today (but raining right now). I begin thinking about stuff. Lot of stuff actually. Some of them are not important such as netbook, hard disk, CPU cooler etc. but some of it kind of important to me. So I left my note on the floor as I lay down and keep on listening to music (plus sound of rain).

I start think about examination, I mean, the upcoming paper. Geotechniques. There are 6 question in the paper but only require to answer 5 out of it. As I keep on look through past year(konon2 pandai), I can conclude that 5 out of 6 question are answerable(is this word exist?) but question no 6, I don't have any idea what to write. Basically question no 6 will ask about the procedure of in-situ test or laboratory test, which I left about a year ago. The note that I have for that chapter is too simple and didn't help much. As for other question, it depend on the type that will be ask. I can see that theoretical question have mark around 5-6 each. If 6 x 5 question = 30 marks! I really don't like the theoretical part as I need to put what I know in words or diagram. I'm quite good with calculation as the step are simple and easy to understand but the requirement, failure, etc... I just can't make the right word to put in the answer sheet.

After that, I think about what to do after examination. My SKP form was not submit to HEP. =(
My Program Coordinator was on DL the day that I want to submit the form. The day after I did get a phone call from my university but I didn't answer it as I thought it was useless because the submit date already past by. =(

My brother once tell me, "how bout you go and work at KFC again?". Hahahaha... I don't really mind working at KFC even though the workload seem like slave but the supervisor there (female by the way) is so bitchy that I couldn't stand it. I am so polite there yet she treat me like SPM student. =( She was the reason I left there early. So I guess I will end up a guy who play Xbox 360 from morning(afternoon actually) till morning again. Haih~ "the guy without a life" not "life without walls".

M$hit Window$ 7 (tetingkap VII) is here. You call buy it for RM365 (Home Premium), RM655 (Ultimate). Just get rid of Window$ Vi"$hit"a. I will upgrade my Operating System after examination. Will open my casing and clean the fans and heatsink, will measure how much the headroom for me to use a CPU cooler soon. Next year my PC will be complete with ATi Radeon 5800, InsyaAllah. "Why don't you go with GeForce?" - I know some of you will ask this kind of question to me. The answer is, I do want to get the best (depend if GT300 manage to impress me) but as I read around, GT200 need 550W at minimum which I can't afford to buy a high Watt power supply. So it is safe to assume that GT300 also will require high power as GT200. As for radeon, it still require 500W (mine is 520W). So if my money is enough(I really do hope so), my PC will equip with "tetingkap VII & Harimau Bintang Salji" + 1.5TB 7200RPM + Zalman CPU cooler. EMPIRE ko-m-pu-re-tto :D

A few day earlier, my mother give me an offer "do you want a netbook?". Honestly, I've been thinking of buying a netbook, but as I need to complete my EMPIRE first, so netbook is out of reach. I answer "yes" immediately. My mother say(she didn't promise) to me that she will buy me a netbook early next year. Waaa.... She really make me excited so I went to my room, google a suitable netbook for me. EEEPC? Wind? One? Well, those are the big name for netbook right? But I want something different, not an ordinary netbook and guess what I found? I found a touchscreen Mac Table. Hahahahaa... it really make me excited. A netbook with a touchscreen and able to boot leopard/snow leopard. And just a few minute/hour after that, I able to gather much info regarding OSX for that netbook. Don't worry, I still going to do a dual boot of Win7 and OSX on that netbook, InsyaAllah. For now, I just pray that I will get that netbook. My mother did say "if you manage to get dean list again, I will buy it for you". Aiyai.... such a hard way to get it... :P

So... as you can see, my blog look like rubbish. Thanks to the closing of geocities, I no longer have any image hosting website. I'm not good with CSS,HTML etc. so I need some help to change my blog so that it can look as a blog. Hahahahaa... Damn, I'm just not good with this stuff. today i have class at 1030
i arrive rather late at 1035 but the class hasn't start yet
and i can see that all the girls outside the classroom
then i recall that they didnt have english class anymore.

i sit there with my friend, chat a little and then the lecturer arrive
as i walk toward the door, i can see that my friend try to get up
and i accidently saw "something". it really make my heart beat fast.
i try to tell her, but she keep on talking with her friend.. so i let it be.

in class, she sat right in front of me.

then class is over. its the last class for this semester and i stand up to go in front

yeah... it IS great.. but... it was equip with Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit (RM650)
which is sucks. the reason why i say it sucks? here my situation:

i want to edit a photo of all of us dean list award student... i intend to frame it so i open up my Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (64 Bit). My dream before i buy i7 is that i can use CS4 flawlessly... but i never use it fully as i rarely edit any pix... but tonight.. i edit a 4272x2848. A 12MP resolution JPEG. Quite big isnt it? but i have edit a 4000x3000 pixel which exactly 12MP using my old BenQ Joybook with Windows XP SP3.

I already include layers for university name, faculty name and student name... just left with 1 name which is suhairi. I confuse is it Mohd or Muhammad Suhairi.. so i wait for his msg.. but 1st.. i save the file as PSD and close my CS4.... but when i get the right name, which is Mohd.... i launch the file.. and guess what?

WTF??? so i start CS4 again... this time, I allocated 4gb of ram to my CS4, close other running program including Firefox and YM. tada~~~ still the same!!!

I even try restarting my computer... yet, the result is the same... i just want to edit a layer for name!!! how hard can it be??

Then my brother arrive home with his laptop. I on it and here we go... Mac OS X 10.5.6 (he refuse to update to 10.5.8 or 10.6.1). Open his CS4, edit and save.. wait... really? edit and save... thats all that i want to do.. just add "Mohd" in front of "Suhairi". Mac has show me.. its soooooo easy to do it.

on 6th of october... while im in class.. i got 1 msg from someone i taught that have completely forgotten about me.. i did reply her msg....

Success with 8 Cores Full HD

Finally... my experiment work out~ I got a MacPro3,1 with audio, LAN and graphic works!!! Its a full HD 8 cores Nehalem and it cost less than RM9299 (mac pro 4(8cores) xeon CPU only).
As u can see... it show 7 core.. but dont worry, mac count no of core from zero, which mean i have 8 cores. 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 :D I even tried to overclock my core i7 to 3.33Ghz and it work, means i can beat mac pro 2.93Ghz easily. That may sound great but i did not let my CPU run on 3.33Ghz as I still stuck with stock cooler. Wait till i get myself a Zalman air cooler or maybe Corsair water cooler then I will let it run 3.33Ghz 24-7.

Yes, the safari web browser. Nothing much.

Wii Sport Full Speed? Not really, cause this is just the title menu, when it come to graphic, i mean poor graphic of wii sport, it run on around 3 to 4 FPS. The second picture is Wii Sport on 1920x1080p resolution. Can't wait to get my hand on ATI HD5000 and play this game again, and with FullHD resolution. :D

6gb (3x 2gb) of ddr3 1333mhz ram from kingston, dvd burner from samsung and pixelview tv tuner for vista

Cooler Master power supply.. modular.. so cable inside is quite neat :D
owh.. my core i7 is a new D0 stepping.. means it can overclock better (and got a brand new logo for the sticker)

My precious motherboard ASUS P6T!!! reason i choose this motherboard because tom's hardware recommend and it also can use LGA775 heat sink~
and the kext(driver) for Mac OSX also available.hehehe

test HDMI output just now
with Chidod's Panasonic VIERA 32" HD ready
test with Xbox 360

the result...

the picture quality is in HD.. so what? same as ordinary laptop (HD is 1280x720 , most laptop 1280x 768 @ 1280 x 800)
the game play is native 720p so Anti Aliasing really needed when play with 720p screen (32" screen really show the wrinkles)
compare to my samsung 23" full HD, my picture quality is way better
think of putting 0.9Mega Pixel to 32" and 2MP on 23" its waaaayyyy different in quality right?

so if u think of buying a HDTV, i would strongly recommend that u buy a FULL HIGH DEFINITION set... its not that expensive anymore.. under RM2000 you can get 32" full HD with a high contrast around 15000:1 if im not mistaken.

yes, when u watch astro.. the picture seem sucks.. same goes to HD ready tv.

HD ready - VGA to HD - 640x480 to 1280x720
FullHD - VGA to FullHD - 640x480 to 1920x1080

fullHD will "upscaling" the vga resolution to fit the entire pixel... which may look kind of distort but worry not as technology getting better.. even astro will change it technology to HD or FullHD soon or later.. so why not buying FullHD instead as HD is not a mainstream (i mean... yeah.. lots of HD video out there.. but u will miss out full HD capability)

not many games offer in full HD (1080p natively, most of them are 720p upscale to 1080)
PS3 do offer 1080p titles more that xbox360

will try HDMI with ATi Radeon HD4870 next semester

how's work? not that great actually
during the 1st week.. i observed how people work
and from my research.. (hehehe) i found out
that people do their work half-heartly (is this correct?)

That day... went i want to go back...
i saw a rare pokemon at my faculty
it was a medicine student~~
with her white lab coat... really a rare pokemon to us

one of my friend try to have a conversation with her
but of coz... she will just smile n go away...

what medicine student do on engineering faculty u ask?
well, they kind of sesat at our faculty
some of us call fakulti penumpang
hahahaa.. this kind of rare pokemon only exist on level 5, 6 and 7.
They are so rare that within 2 years i in university
only 4 times i saw them in the life, the hallway etc
so rare that sometime we dont even know they exist among us

- want to go out with MONSTER JEPUN... but she at her mother house.. impossible to go out
- playing game for a bit..
- look at my timetable (my timetable is my wallpaper)
- idle in front of my laptop... stare at it for quite a while (do nothing but stare)
- watch the clock tick... as time goes by.. just wait for azan..

it's seems that i start to flashback everything
yes, i mean EVERYTHING back..
from the start to the end...

why i can't let it out from my head?
i don't really like to be in this kind of situation
where i start to think about all of the past over and over again

it's start when i in high school till i'm in university
all that i've been through come back at one time..

i read back 'the book'
the one i get in 2008

the content make me think
and think and think..
my head and heart really hurt right now

what am i suppose to do at those time
so that i can correct all my mistake
all those stuff that i've done that hurt others

i know i am not that GOOD
i'm just and ordinary guy who try to live
his life normally...
but things did go wrong.. i do make mistake..
n the worst thing is.. i kept on repeating all those mistake
even though i know its wrong (now and then)

a simple ring, yet give a big meaning to me

i just dont know.. what's wrong with me?

Recently, I am so tired to go to university. Don't know why.. it seems like i'm too lazy to went there. Always rush to the class in the morning.. even when i go out early.. the traffic get me stuck for a while and still.. i manage to arrive on time (830am).

honestly... i'm not even interested with it..
but with so many thing happen..

today i went to Carrefour Subang Jaya
i went there to find Samsung i550w
i go to the shop below the stair.. but they said
that they didn't have any stock for Samsung
so i went to another shop and he give me
price Rm1000

he said that the stock will come around 3pm
and he will contact me if the stock come
earlier than 3pm

so i went back to shah alam..
want to pay my Celcom bills
in my ride to Section 9, i got a call from the shop
saying that i550w that i want (AP set)
doesn't come with WiFi...

I really want to scream "WTF??"
so i park in front of celcom centre
and start my conversation properly

its been a while since i update this blog… actually I have so many things to write here… but then again, my laziness “win” again. hehehehe…

let’s start my blog with a story about this one girl, let’s say P. behind her smile, there’s deep meaning about the thing that she’s done. well, i know… she’s not the only person who’ve been through all this kind of stuff… but still because i used to know her… it doesn’t make sense.. huhuhuhu… only 2 guys know what happen to her. well, i don’t want to bother about her anymore as she now in a different dimension.. hahaha.. i know.. none of you reader will understand what nonsense i write here.. it just a reminder to me ^_^

this tuesday, my new sem will begin. yeah!!! I really excited!!! is it because of my holiday was sucks to begin with or i just a student who love to go to university? hahahaha.. well.. i guess because when class start, at least i have an activity to do.. and the activities really make my brain work again..
my timetable for the next sem was quite relax. i just need to go to university on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. what does that mean? it mean holiday for 4 days per week, a huge saving per week (as i allocated RM100 per week and now turn out to be RM100 for 3 days) and so much time to play games and study. hehehee.. this time, i seriously want to study smart. i even bought 5 files (it indicate the number of subject for this sem) to organize my work later. before this, all the handout n stuff are quite messy and yet, i still manage to survive the sem without fail (Alhamdulillah, lucky).

1st December... around 8PM local time, I went out with my cousin to fetch my uncle. As I ride suddenly I look up into the dark sky. I saw the moon. But wait, there's something wrong with the moon. I look up again and saw two star on top of the moon and it form a smile.

Subhanallah.

When I reach home, someone message me, am I aware of the moon or not. I answered yes and she told me that this incident is in the new // Bulletin Utama.

It turn out to be Venus and Jupiter there.
I don't know what it suppose to mean, but I do know that this is a sign from the Almighty.
